Why Australian Ad Spend Growth Is Yet to Signal a Recovery
Australian ad spend returned to positive territory in June, but agency leaders remain cautious about calling it a recovery. Guideline SMI data shows spending increased 0.3% for the month. This brought growth for the first six months of 2026 to 0.4%. Digital, outdoor, cinema and newspapers have all recorded growth for the year to date.
However, several industry leaders warn that major events and government spending may be supporting the headline figures. The FIFA World Cup gave advertisers a major cultural event to build campaigns around. Government advertising also increased. Outside these areas, brands continue to scrutinise budgets and demand clear results from their media investment.
Advertisers continue to prioritise measurable results
The shift towards measurable channels remains a key theme. Marketers are putting more money into digital, streaming and other formats that offer flexibility and clear performance signals. However, industry experts warn against focusing too heavily on short term returns. Brands still need to invest in awareness and future demand.
Lexlab founder Alfie Lagos also questions whether the headline data reflects the entire Australian ad market. He notes that SMI captures almost all media agency booked spend, but a large amount of advertising sits outside agency booking systems. Lexlab operates outside this pool, where Lagos says conditions appear more cautious. He has also seen larger agency partners report clients cutting budgets despite signs of market recovery.
Overall, the figures provide some reason for optimism, but uncertainty remains. Economic pressure and fragile consumer confidence continue to influence decisions. For advertisers, the challenge will be balancing measurable short term performance with investment that supports longer term brand and business growth.
