How the Federal Budget 2026 Will Shape Advertising Investment

Media agency leaders have responded cautiously to the Federal Budget 2026, arguing that while it provides some stability, it is unlikely to deliver a meaningful boost to advertising investment in the second half of the year. Although the budget includes tax relief, a permanent instant asset write off for small businesses and broader tax reforms, many believe it stops short of restoring business confidence.

Several agency leaders expect brands to remain disciplined with spending as economic uncertainty continues. While some see opportunities in retail, travel and FMCG as household pressure gradually eases, most agree marketers should prepare for steady rather than accelerated growth. The consensus is that confidence will improve slowly, with businesses continuing to balance caution against opportunities to gain market share.

Lexlab founder Alfie Lagos believes the budget’s own forecasts point to a defensive second half of 2026. Rather than creating an immediate lift in advertising demand, he argues businesses will adopt a wait and see approach. Lagos also highlights opportunities within the property sector, noting that transitional negative gearing arrangements could create predictable advertising demand for real estate businesses, mortgage brokers and developer marketing over the next 18 months. He also warns agencies to prepare for possible changes resulting from the proposed News Bargaining Incentive affecting major digital platforms.

Across the industry, agency leaders agree that long term growth will depend less on short term stimulus and more on rebuilding business and consumer confidence. While the budget offers some relief, marketers are likely to continue prioritising careful planning, balanced investment and flexible strategies as economic conditions evolve throughout 2026.
