Lexlab’s Role in Bringing Australia’s Drop Bears to Life
Lexlab is proud to celebrate the success of Josh and Laura Sambono, winners of the 2024 AACTA Pitch: Bite competition. The initiative, run in partnership with Monster Pictures, champions bold new voices in Australian horror and genre storytelling.
The Sambonos took out the top prize with Drop Bears – a fresh, darkly comic concept about a bullied Indigenous teen and a marsupial expert protecting a baby koala from vengeful mythical beasts. The project stood out for its originality and its strong marketing and distribution strategy.
As part of the initiative, Lexlab director Alfie Lagos worked alongside Monster Pictures co-founder Grant Hardie to support the finalists. Alfie provided strategic guidance on campaign development and audience targeting, helping participants refine their projects for the real-world marketplace.
The winners receive $10,000 in development funds and a distribution deal with Monster Pictures. According to the Sambonos, access to industry leaders like Lagos was invaluable, helping them elevate their pitch from creative idea to commercially viable concept.
This marks Lexlab’s latest step in backing the next wave of Australian storytellers. While the agency is best known for its expertise in performance media, Lexlab is equally focused on growing creative ecosystems and supporting the stories that shape culture.
